Geeking out

I got a library card today. With my brand new library card, I check out a few books on alternative processes for photography. Not only are these the first books I’ve picked up in a while (a sad thing to admit), but they’re definitely the first text-type books that I’ve been eager to read.

Why?

I’ve recently started corresponding with my photo professor from University of Delaware, Nancy Breslin. Nancy specializes in pinhole photography and plastic cameras (she shoots with a Diana+, too!).  She also teaches the Alternate Processes course at the university. I’ve always been inspired by her Square Meals: A Pinhole Diary of Eating Out series. Looking at her Flickr page, I’ve been intrigued by her tri-color gum prints.

Kerri says that they’re hard to do. But that doesn’t quite mean that there isn’t hope to at least experiment with it or some other alternative processes.

Anyhoo, I’ll be doing some reading at work to take up some of my free time at work. Maybe I’ll get some ideas of things to do in my art space at the new place. I really can’t wait.

It better be worth it…

to die by the hands of Elkton. Kerri and I went on a photo adventure a few days ago, sneaking around a few houses that stand out on the back roads of Elkton.

Of course, when we got home, we were covered in ticks. Lymes Disease is not my idea of a good time.

At least the Polaroids came out decent.

They’re nice. But not sure I’m willing to become diseased. I’ll be steering clear from that area for a while!

Treasure Hunting

Kerri and I made our way to Route 896, thinking that we’d find some epic old farmhouses. We didn’t. In fact, we were on our way home, when we came across something sweet.

Here are a few nuggets from the adventure!

(Not at Night)

I needed that!

An old face on Instant Photographs

Today is a good day for blogging (outside of the fact that my new external hard drive has been locked before I even got the chance to use it)!!

For once, I’ve got my own work to showcase!

At the start of the day, things weren’t looking so great. I brought my Polaroid 340 Land Camera in to work and plugged in my brand new battery hoping that it would solve the darkness problems.

One shot later and we were at a minor success. There was an image, but it was quite dark:

Not Perfect (but at least there's an image)

With the negative sheet, Amanda tried to make a Polaroid transfer (it didn’t work, but the idea’s got promise). I think I’m going to utilize an old sketchbook to try my own hand at transfers.

What else could be wrong with my camera? Nothing! In fact, during my lunch, I decided to go on an adventure to the nearby Ramsey Farm, where Kerri and I first started experimenting with Diana and Holga.

Three instant images later, I was happy to find that the battery was indeed doing its job.

I’m really liking the colors – although, they’re a bit different from what I saw on the website.

Now, I’ll definitely be taking advantage of all the film I got for my birthday.

2 packs of Silk Film (one of which I’m using now) (it’s also SOLD OUT!!)

1 pack of Sepia

1 pack of Chocolate

1 pack of Blue

Thoughts after my first successes:

All the fun (and cost) of film, without the wait!

Plus extra ways to experiment.

Totally worth it.

Now and Then: The Beehive.

In January 2008, as I was driving down to Towson, I came across this place at the side of the road, so I decided to take pictures of it.

This is the Beehive.

The Beehive

I returned last week with Kerri and this time, photographed the area using Diana F+. Considering I only liked one from the first photoshoot, it’s pretty clear that this one went much better.
