Reunions!
Being an adult is tough. Full time work, with schedules that don’t allow you take off despite the extremely advanced notice, budgets and other scary words that take over your life in the real world. However, when it comes down to it,family’s more important than anything. It’s the one thing that shouldn’t ever let you down. So when it came down to using my vacation days illegally and risking trouble to get down to my family reunion, I gave a hearty, “hell yes.”
Even though it was only for one day, getting to see everyone and rekindling (and in some cases, starting) relationships with my relatives who I get to see every two or three years, it was absolutely worth it.
As embarrassing as it was to admit, I did have ask around behind some people’s backs to figure out who everyone was, but I’m sure I wasn’t the only one.
We spent the day at the “Virginia Passarell Compound” as I believe it was called, I was pretty impressed – and immediately relaxed – at all the space there was around me. Three families lived on one big plot of land and were all connected by a driveway and different woodsy trails. My family missed out on the morning round of golf, but I probably saved myself some embarrassment (I saved it for the poker game later).
When everyone got back, the barbecue began – as did all the (re)introductions and greetings. The sun was shining, the sky was blue, and all you cliche signs of a beautiful day were present – including the smells of barbecue and bonfires. There were lots of adventures, photos, walks, turtle eggs, dogs, and a Jeep ride to the river. I’ll definitely be planning a trip back in the summer to do some inner tubing down the James River.
After some more food and dessert, I was ready to pass out from exhaustion, but I was persuaded to play a few rounds of poker. Too many stories and quotes to be shared, but the Vincents didn’t do too badly.
