Controversy!
I came across this article a good while ago. It’s interesting because photography, regardless of whether it’s journalistic or conceptual, has the ability to tell stories.
The ones that cause the controversies are the best, of course.
Back in March, a 10-year-old in Texas created a photograph for his church’s Stations of the Cross art display. The photo – meant to be a modern interpretation of when Jesus fell on his way to being crucified – showed a young boy being beaten by a police officer while a crowd watched.
In my opinion, I think it’s pretty tame – compared to some art photography that I’ve seen. Also, considering its actual theme, Jackson Potts’ representation is pretty awesome!
He had his 7-year old brother represent Jesus because he correlated the purity of Jesus with the innocence of a child.
Unfortunately, the church banned the photo thinking that it would be too frightening to children. They did give him the option to create a new piece which he eventually did begrudgingly.
I just found an article that was written two weeks later showing the piece that he created to replace his first at the Ecclesia Church.
It also did mention that there were other churches that were willing to hang his photograph.
Pretty cool what the power of photography do for a 10-year-old.
